QC HeartSafe Frequently Asked Questions

The Quad Cities HEARTSafe Coalition’s vision is to increase bystander CPR to save more lives.

What is cardiac arrest?

Cardiac arrest happens when the entire heart stops beating, and can happen anywhere to anyone at any time.

How common is heart disease?

In 2015, heart disease was the leading cause of death in Iowa (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), responsible for about 24% of deaths (Iowa Department of Public Health). Most cardiac arrest happens in the home.

In 2016, 31% of cardiac patients received bystander CPR in Scott County, Iowa (MEDIC EMS). For every one-minute CPR is not performed on a person in cardiac arrest the chance of survival decreases by 10% (American Heart Association); which is why the Quad Cities HEARTSafe Coalition’s vision is to increase bystander CPR to save more lives!
