Scott County Youth Justice and Rehabilitation Center Wellness Policy
Nutritional Education
Goal 1 – Serve nutritional meals
- Provide staff with on-going food service training to keep staff aware of procedure changes and new regulations
- Provide an accurate record keeping to verify cleanliness of the facility and equipment as well as proper serving procedures
- Cooperate with supporting vendors and government agencies to maintain a safe, efficiently operating kitchen
Goal 2 - Increase good eating habits of residents while in Detention
- Provide well-balanced, nutritional meals as regulated by the National School Lunch Program, including a nutritional after-school snack
- Staff will provide positive role modeling by practicing good eating habits
Goal 3 - Promote a positive dining experience
- Provide a clean, safe, and enjoyable dining environments to eat meals and snacks
- Consistently maintain an eating schedule, with a minimum wait time to promote regular eating habits
- Provide adequate time for residents to enjoy their meals
- Provide easy access to water fountains, so residents can have water during meal and snack times, as well as throughout the day
- Staff will not restrict food as a punishment
Physical Fitness
Goal 1 - Promote physical fitness
- All residents will be provided at least 3o minutes per day in the gymnasium for daily individual and/or group physical activities (i.e. basketball, walking, jogging, calisthenics, etc.)
- Staff will implement and oversee rules of all game that support fairness, sportsmanship, and equality, so all levels of athleticism can participate
- The Area Education Agency will provide education on the benefits of physical activity
Health
Goal 1 - Promote Healthy Lifestyles
- Provide awareness and individual education on proper hygiene skills
- The Scott County Health Department will provide Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI’s) awareness and education one time per month
- Staff will provide the opportunity for religious services one time per week
- A Registered Nurse will conduct physicals on all new residents, as well as see residents in need of medical treatment
- A Registered Nurse will oversee medication approval and triage injuries and illnesses as need be
- Vera French Mental Health Cetner will provide suicide assessment and psychotropic medication review as needed
Education
Goal 1 - Provide a structured environment to ensure the quality of learning
- Promote the benefits of education through positive reinforcement and encouragement
- Prohibit the use of education as a reward or punishment
- Provide opportunities for constructive learning through facility programming when school is not in session.
