The Medical Examiner is a physician, appointed by the Scott County Board of Supervisors, who works with law enforcement and the health care community to investigate unexpected, suspicious, or accidental deaths. The Medical Examiner authorizes autopsies, when necessary.

Medical examiner records are confidential under Iowa Code 22.7(41), except that (1) records may be released to a law enforcement agency that is investigating a death; (2) autopsy reports may be released to the immediate next of kin and; (3) cause and manner of death are not confidential. The Scott County Medical Examiner’s Office does not comment on cases under its purview.
