Opioid Initiatives

What are opioid settlement funds?

Local jurisdictions across the United States are receiving funds from settlements of litigation brought against pharmaceutical companies, distributors, and retailers accused of contributing to the opioid crisis.

How can funds be used?

The settlement agreement states that no more than 15% of funds can be spent on non-opioid-related expenses, and at least 70% of the funds must be spent on future opioid remediation efforts. Exhibit E, a document included in the settlement agreement, outlines core abatement strategies and approved uses (i.e., evidence-based or evidence-informed strategies).

How much is Scott County receiving?

Scott County will be receiving approximately $12 million between 2023 and 2039.

How is Scott County spending the funds?

The Scott County Board of Supervisors tasked Scott County Health Department and Scott County Community Services with assessing community needs to determine the best use for opioid settlement funds. The Health Department and Community Services assembled an Opioid Settlement Steering Committee to assist with the strategic planning process of deciding how to utilize funds.
