Protesting An Assessment

Assessment Protest Timeline 

Property owners who disagree with their property assessment have the following options to appeal annually, and in this order:

  1. Contact Assessor's Office – July 1 to March 1 
    Assessor's field work time - property inspections, appraisal work, questions answered, issues resolved, etc.
  2. Informal Assessment Review - April 2 to April 25
    Informal process. if proven by owner, assessment can be changed by Assessor
  3. Board of Review Filing – April 2 to April 30
    Submit protest petition to Assessor's Office.
  4. Board of Review Hearing – May 1 to May 31
    Semi-Formal process. Take evidence/proof in front of 3 member board to decide assessment.
  5. PAAB / District Court – Must file with Board first
    Formal process to decide Assessment.

If you disagree with the Assessor's estimate of value please consider these questions before proceeding:

  • What is the actual fair market value of my property?
  • What would it sell for if it were listed today?
  • How does this value compare to similar properties in the neighborhood?

  1. Do a self review of your assessment
  2. Contact the Assessor's Office with any assessment question (anytime)

If steps 1 and 2 don't resolve your concern, continue to these steps:

  1. Request an official informal assessment review (April 2 - April 25)
  2. File a written protest with the Board of Review (April 2 - April 30)
  3. Property Assessment Appeal Board and District Court
