Filing Date Error in Iowa Secretary of State Candidate Guide to Primary Election

DAVENPORT – Scott County Auditor Kerri Tompkins announced today that her office has discovered an error in one version of the Candidate’s Guide to the Primary Election issued by the Iowa Secretary of State. “The original version of the Guide stated the last day for county candidates for the primary election to file nomination papers is Wednesday, March 30, 2022 by 5:00 p.m.,” Tompkins said. “The correct date is Friday, March 25, 2022 by 5:00 p.m.,” she said.

“We posted the guide on the county website for use by local candidates in good faith believing the Secretary’s Office had the correct date. The Secretary’s Office subsequently updated the date in the Guide but did not inform our office of the change,” Tompkins said. “My office posted the updated version of the Guide on March 11, 2022 after we learned of the error,” she said. “Our election calendar on the county website listed the correct date, and my office issued a news release on March 8, 2022 listing the correct deadline,” she added.

The deadline is part of Iowa law and there is no ability to extend the deadline. “Due to the possible confusion resulting from these different dates I wanted to reach out to the public and make clear what the deadline actually is,” Tompkins said.

The affected offices include Attorney, Auditor, Recorder, Treasurer and Supervisor.
