General Information

The Scott County Attorney's Office serves in civil matters as legal counsel for the Scott County Board of Supervisors and all county officers and agencies. The County Attorney's Office also serves in criminal matters as chief prosecutor for the State of Iowa in Scott County.

The Scott County Attorneys Office has assistant county attorneys and support personnel. The Scott County Attorneys Office processes over 4,000 indictable criminal cases per year and averages six contacts with county agencies per week.

In the recent past, both the criminal justice system and Scott County, itself, have undergone changes that have impacted the way in which the County Attorney's Office functions.

For instance, now that insurance costs have caused Scott County to become largely self-insured, the County Attorney’s Office’s civil division represents Scott County and its employees in almost all litigation filed against Scott County. Requests for County Attorney opinions and contacts for advice have therefore multiplied greatly in recent years.

Also, the County Attorney's Office administers the largest asset forfeiture program in the State of Iowa.

Alternative revenue sources aid Scott County in maintaining its position as a leader in providing quality services to its citizens at a responsible cost.
