Job Summary

Under general supervision, of the Secondary Roads Superintendent, the Heavy Equipment Operator operates a variety of equipment to maintain roads and keep roadways clear of snow, ice, and debris.

This position is for Floating Motor Grader Operator ? Motor Grader Snow Route #7 (Long Grove/Eldridge)".

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operates a variety of heavy equipment to include motor grader, heavy truck bulldozer, excavators, rollers and scrapers.

Removes snow, ice, and debris from roads, shoulders and bridge decks; maintains road shoulders to preserve road edges.

Reports and flags unsafe culverts.

Inspects equipment daily; checks and tops off all fluids; adjusts clearance specifications; checks tire levels and adds air as necessary; washes equipment; maintains all specifications outlined in manufacturers manuals.

Mows road shoulders to maintain road visibility; cuts fence lines to decrease snow in the roads and reduce the need for snow removal. Mows grounds at County sheds.

Performs manual labor and/or operator duties as necessary to conduct general road maintenance and construction projects including, but not limited to, grading roads and ditches, excavation and earth moving, maintaining, repairing and constructing bridges and culverts, laying pipe and tile, building drainage structures, digging and cleaning ditches, patching of concrete and asphalt roads, spreading rock, shoulder maintenance, and mowing.

Maintains information related to field entrances and drives to monitor erosion for farmers.

Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND two (2) years of experience operating a heavy truck and a motor grader; AND two (2) years of experience in road construction/maintenance OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:
Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.

Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.

Tools, equipment, materials, and methods used in road maintenance and construction.

Basic equipment maintenance methods.

Skill in:
Reading and following equipment manuals.

Following safety procedures including the proper use of personal protective equipment.

Operating a variety of heavy equipment and trucks.

Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.

Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Supplemental Information

License and Certification Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's license at the time of hire.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed outdoors throughout Scott County and requires exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazards associated with traffic, dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases.
May be required to climb ladders, dig or work in trenches, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
May be required to be available or "on-call" during off-duty hours.
