MED-COM Supervisor/ Education Controller – Job Description
Definition: Coordinates day-to-day operations of the dispatch center, including but not limited to, the receipt of requests for service and the appropriate provision of Company equipment and personnel to that request. Supervisors administer Company policies and procedures, and promote the highest standards of EMS and related Company functions. The MED-COM Supervisor/Education Controller oversees, plans, and implements MED-COM’s Education programs. Reports to the Quality & Compliance Manager.
1. Coordinates and reviews all requests for service, including scheduled and non-scheduled services. Assures that all requests for service are answered in a timely manner.
2. Develops implements and maintains a public safety telecommunications orientation and educational programs for new and current employees, including but not limited to, training outlines, lesson plans, handouts, maps, recordings and resources, evaluations, testing and documentation instruments. Incumbent will review training reports and evaluations and identify trends, patterns, and problem areas of performance and will meet with and counsel dispatchers-in-training. The incumbent will identify and recommend adjustments to dispatcher training including expediting training processes or implementing remedial training.
3. Assists the MED-COM Supervisor/Quality Controller to train and monitor performance development of employees. Works to assure quality performance from SSCs in their duties.
4. Manages and coordinates a Continuing Dispatch Education (CDE) program for current employees, including, but not limited to, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols for certification and recertification training in compliance with the National Academy Standards.
5. Oversees the MED-COM Training Officer Program including, but not limited to, scheduling all stages of training, assisting in the selection process for MED-COM Training Officers; monitors and assists MED-COM Training Officers in the performance of their training duties, attends training division meetings, and makes recommendations to the Quality/Education Manager regarding trainee status.
6. Responsible for validations, notifications to State of Iowa for personnel changes.
7. Reports, reviews and provides input to the Quality/Education Manager regarding quality assurance and training matters.
8. Assists the Training & Development Manager in development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures regarding operations and training.
9. Assists in screening process for new employees.
10. Delivers speeches and presentations to co-workers, local government authorities, the general public, and local school districts.
11. Reviews and provides input to the Quality & Compliance Manager regarding quality assurance and training budget line items.
12. Responsible for ensuring the appropriate confidentiality and security of various departmental records and reports including, but not limited to, patient care reports, training records, quality assurance data, findings and recommendations.
13. Prepares special projects, research, studies and reports. Serves on various committees as required.
14. Reviews emergency communications literature and attends various seminars and conferences to maintain awareness and stay abreast of changes in public safety telecommunications functions, training, technology and equipment.
15. Communicates operational changes to SSCs in an appropriate and timely manner.
16. Supervises MED-COM operation and the System Status Controllers (SSCs) including evaluation of their job performance in a timely manner.
17. Responsible for ensuring that all patient information, including written records and radio transmissions, are delivered in the manner as outlined in the SOP guidelines and in the Department policies.
18. Responsible for assuring that MED-COM is orderly at all times and that the working and resting environments the employees are assigned are kept in a clean and neat fashion.
19. Supervises employees to ensure they report to work as scheduled, and are in compliance with procedures and guidelines as set forth in the Department policies.
20. Required to take all testing as required by the division in which they are supervising on an annual basis.
21. Performs recurring duty as a SSC and Training Officer as directed, and demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to assure that staffing needs of MED-COM are maintained.
22. Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. All license and certifications required by the job description of the division he/she will be supervising. Demonstrated ability to provide coaching, counseling, and effectively train personnel in a manner that preserves dignity while not lowering performance standards.
2. Ability to utilize effective verbal, written and listening communications skills.
3. Ability to utilize personal computers and various software applications including, but not limited to electronic spreadsheets, word processing and department specific software.
4. Ability to maintain professional and effective working relationships with staff, emergency services personnel, other governmental agencies, and the general public.
5. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
6. Ability to operate standard office equipment and perform computer input and retrieval functions utilizing various hardware and software programs.
7. Ability to plan and organize a personal work schedule, set priorities, meet deadlines and perform duties efficiently while managing frequent interruptions.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Two (2) years’ experience in the division he/she will be supervising.
