Job Summary

Under basic supervision, of the Secondary Roads Superintendent and Crew Leaders, the Roads Maintenance Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks to maintain secondary roads to ensure clear and safe roads for travelers.

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Performs manual labor necessary to conduct maintenance and construction projects including, but not limited to; patches asphalt and concrete roads; lays pipe and tile; builds drainage structures; mows and clears rights-of-way; spreads rock for gravel roads; digs and cleans ditches; performs shoulder construction and maintenance; routes and seals cracks, repairs, maintains and builds bridges and culverts; replaces road signs.

Removes snow, ice, and debris from roads, shoulders and bridge decks.

Assists in surveying; participates in erosion control activities; collects trash in road right-of-ways; removes dead animal carcasses from traveled portions of the roadway; assists with flood clean up; erects and dissembles snow fences.

Operates a variety of equipment and machinery used in maintenance and construction projects to include heavy truck, router, air compressor, jack hammer, concrete saw, chainsaw, wood chipper, skid loader, end loader, lawn mower, excavator or dozer, scissor and aerial lift, boom/brush mower, hauling oversized loads, tanker truck, jetter, paving screed, boom truck, sheep foot.

Performs regular inspections and maintenance on assigned equipment on a consistent basis to ensure safety and operability; applies grease to fittings; tops of fluid levels; changes light bulbs; washes trucks.

Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND one (1) year of experience in road and bridge maintenance or construction, which includes operation of heavy trucks; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:
Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.

Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.

Tools, equipment, materials, and methods used in road maintenance and construction.

Basic equipment maintenance methods.

Skill in:
Reading and following construction plans and specifications..

Following safety procedures including the proper use of personal protective equipment.

Operating a variety of heavy equipment and trucks.

Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.

Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Supplemental Information

License and Certification Requirements
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's license.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed outdoors throughout Scott County and requires exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazards associated with traffic, dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases.
May be required to climb ladders, dig or work in trenches, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
May be required to be available or "on-call" during off-duty hours.
