Job Summary

Under limited direction and in collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director oversees, directs, supervises, coordinates, and monitors all activities and staff of the department supporting community-based diversion programs and detention centers and facilities. Oversees the day to day operation of the facilities to ensure all Federal and state laws and regulations are being adhered to at all times.

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Works with the Director to provide supervision, direction, and support for the department; oversees detention centers and provides direction and coordination.
  • Ensures all detention center operations and duties are handled with competency and professionalism; daily walks through the living units, control room area, and ensures all needs are met by staff.
  • Provides crisis response and management; responds to potentially violent episodes within the facility to actively de-escalate youth or physically restrain persons; observes staff and ensures all physical restraint techniques are performed in accordance with Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), and state code standards.
  • Schedules and provides training and ongoing coaching to staff in CPI, overall safety and security training, PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) guidelines, policies and procedures, PBIS (Positive Behavior interventions and Supports), Medication Management.
  • Manages and administers all staff and related human resources activities; schedules staff, provides performance evaluations, and participates in interviewing and hiring; performs a range of administrative and clerical tasks facilitating the success of the department.
  • Directs and supervises shift supervisors; provides coaching, mentoring, and feedback; leads staff meetings and provides insight and direction.
  • Attends job fairs and college classes, creates presentations, interviews potential hires, and hires staff to fill open positions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
Bachelor's Degree; AND three (3) years of management experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Knowledge of:

  • Juvenile Detention Center and Community-Based programs.
  • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Administrative management
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Supervisory principles and practices


Skill in:

  • Managing and administering detention centers and programs.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Maintaining financial documents and accounting ledgers.
  • Handling and patrolling detention center.
  • Applying finance knowledge in a community center setting.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Supplemental Information

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid Driver?s License.
Medication Management
Must be CPR/First Aid certified within six (6) months of hire.
CPI Trainer within one (1) year of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed throughout the detention center and requires exposure to potential physical harm from residents, hazardous cleaning chemicals, and bodily fluids. Moderate physical exertion may be required when physically restraining residents.
