Job Summary

Under basic supervision, the Custodian cleans and disinfects assigned areas to maintain a healthy environment for County staff, citizens, and visitors. Monitors and reports additional maintenance issues and verifies buildings are locked and secured at the end of the day.

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Dust mops, sweeps, mops, and vacuums entry ways, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, workout rooms, conference rooms, and hallways daily; dusts and wipes off tables, chairs, and other surfaces; empties trash receptacles and collects recycling.

Cleans restrooms; disinfect toilets, sinks, and mirrors; wipes down surfaces to include doors, toilet paper holders, paper towel dispensers, and ledges; refills paper products.

Cleans locker room showers and sink areas; wipes down lockers and benches; wipe down and disinfects workout equipment and mirrors.

Shampoos carpets, buffs and auto scrubs hard floors as needed.

Strips and refinishes floors

Performs bonnet cleaning of floors as needed

Replaces light bulbs in various types of light fixtures- may require use of ladder

Sets tables and chairs up for meetings.

Locks and secures exterior and interior doors and sets alarms at closing time.

Assists with removing snow and salting walkways.

Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND some previous custodial experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:
Basic cleaning methods, tools, and materials.

Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.

Cleaning products and appropriate uses.

Skill in:
Following written and verbal instructions.

Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.

Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Supplemental Information

License and Certification Requirements
Must possess a valid Driver's license.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at various County facilities, including detention facilities, with inmates present.
May be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, machinery, potential physical harm from inmates, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases.
May be required to climb ladders and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Incumbent may be requested to report to work or "on-call" during off-duty hours.
