Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Security Officer performs general security activities for the Administrative Center. Assists public by answering basic inquiries and directing them to appropriate departments. Provides help with conflicts, assists building departments with visiting clients, and ensures personnel and facility safety.

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Monitors the front entrance and provides support for visitors and other persons requiring directions or questions.
  • Watches, observes, and evaluates cameras for facilities monitoring activity and ensuring the safety of the building.
  • Patrols the exterior of facilities and building; checks and monitors parking lots and the perimeter of the property; ensures County and employee property is not being damaged and the area is secure.
  • Provides security for the interior of the building; walks the floors to ensure personnel are appropriately badged; performs opening and closing tasks, checks exterior doors to make sure they are secure and reports them to FSS management if they are not, and monitors security.
  • Responds to calls and occasionally receives calls from various departments; assists with angry and irate clients and works to de-escalate situations.
  • Works with Sheriff?s Office staff and other law enforcement officers as needed.
  • Completes and maintains reports on incidents. Keeps accurate records.
  • Escorts citizens out of buildings and handles security situations with tact.
  • Attends Board meetings as directed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma, GED with experience in law enforcement, military, or armed security AND two (2) years of armed security experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Law enforcement and related practices
  • Security equipment, including stun gun, and firearms,
  • Security surveillance
  • Radio calls and responses.
  • Customer service principles, practices, and etiquette.
  • De-escalation tactics and techniques.
  • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Skill in:

  • Taking action for security situations.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with County staff and the public.
  • Resolving and de-escalating conflicts.
  • Maintaining composure and working effectively under stress.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Report writing.
  • First Aid and administering CPR.
  • Armed security functions.
  • Handling a firearm safely.
  • Evaluating situations to determine and apply proper use of force.

Supplemental Information

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid driver?s license.

Firearm Certification and State of Iowa professional weapons carry permit.

CPR and First Aid Training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in various environments supporting the safety and security of County facilities and building. Responds to emergency calls and handles irate or angry persons. Uses weapons, vehicles, and equipment as needed and may be exposed to human waste and inclement weather.
