Spring means it’s time to prepare for severe weather!
Watch v. Warning - What's the Difference?
Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are common in Iowa and can be very dangerous. Know the difference between a warning and a watch. A tornado warning means a tornado is happening or is imminent and you should take shelter immediately. A tornado watch means that a tornado is possible. Stay tuned to local alerts and know where to shelter if you need to.
Seek Shelter
When severe weather hits, it’s crucial to seek shelter in the safest location. For tornadoes, go to a basement, storm cellar, or interior room on the lowest level (away from windows). For severe thunderstorms, stay indoors and away from windows, and unplug any non-essential electrical appliances to protect them from power surges.
To receive up-to-date safety information, you can sign up for alerts through Alert Iowa. Alert Iowa is a notification and emergency messaging system used by state and local authorities to quickly share emergent and non-emergent information to residents.
