World Breastfeeding Week Encourages Support for Parents

World Breastfeeding Week takes place August 1–7, 2026. This year’s theme is “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works." The campaign goal is to build long-term support systems so that all families can breastfeed if they want to. Per the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, lactation education (to learn things like positioning and latching), support when giving birth, and help with breastfeeding issues can increase the rate of babies that are only breastfed by almost 50%. 

Breastfeeding is not always easy, and the Scott County Health Department (SCHD) wants families to know they are not alone. The SCHD Healthy Pregnancy Program offers free lactation support and education from Certified Lactation Specialists. Solo and group classes are offered.
