Do You Need Another COVID Shot?

The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated an unprecedented effort to develop, test, and administer new vaccines to the worldwide population in a short amount of time.  Data continues to be gathered to determine the length of immunity the current vaccines are providing. The crucial questions are whether people are getting the right dosage of vaccine for the best protection and whether multiple doses are better than one.  Dr. Celine Grounder, Dr. John Moore, and Dr. Carlos del Rio, experts in infectious disease and immunology, provide a synopsis of the current state of additional doses of COVID vaccinations.  Article:  Do You Need Another COVID Shot?

Dr. Louis Katz, medical director of the Scott County Health Department, has provided the following information on the topic of additional vaccine doses as it relates to current research:

  1. The need for or timing of additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines is NOT yet established.
  2. We need to understand much better what group or groups of vaccinated people will benefit from additional doses and when. These might include the elderly and those with damaged immune systems.
  3. The continued emergence of new variants of the virus may also drive our understanding of the need for additional doses or reformulated vaccines.
  4. Current vaccines being used in the US continue to offer very strong protection from severe illness, hospital admission, and death.
